To be completely fair, people tried to tell me.
But postpartum hit me like a train and I was NOT prepared. I’m not sure anyone CAN prepare someone, because everyone’s experience is so different. Plus, what’s crucial and works wonders for one woman may be completely unnecessary for another.
That being said, take this list with a grain of salt. It’s what worked for me, and I hope some of it is helpful for you!
1. Silverettes
My husband came up with the easiest way I know to describe them, although somewhat inappropriate (sorry.) For lack of a better explanation, around here they’re called “nipple thimbles.” Small silver cups that you can slip in a bra to keep fabric from rubbing something that’s already raw and sore.
Fun story about these…I didn’t want to spend the money, so I didn’t. 48 hours into breastfeeding? You better believe I payed out the nose for same day Amazon shipping on top of the price of the Silverettes, and I regret it zero percent!
2. Adult Diapers
Last time I had one little tiny pack in my postpartum box. This time? Two giant packs, just in case, thank you very much! I also splurged on non toxic ones from Rael. I mean, you’ve been through a lot down there. The last thing you need is toxins while trying to heal. Want to try them? You can use this link to get $10 off your order of $45 or more. They make comprehensive period care, so check them out even if you’re not postpartum!
3. Donut Pillow
My mom showed up with this the day after I gave birth…and sustained a third degree tear. Anything that released some of the pressure was very welcome while you’re sitting around snuggling that new baby.
4. Skin to skin friendly clothes
Last time I ended up in a nursing bra, a flannel shirt and my husband’s basketball shorts. It worked JUST FINE, but I promised myself that this time I would buy something cute because, let’s face it, you really don’t feel that cute postpartum. I grabbed this nightgown and this robe this time around. Both are super soft, and can be worn past postpartum!
5. Pain Relief
Ibuprofen & After Ease. I’m prettttty crunchy. But a 3rd degree tear had me taking ibuprofen, and I think it’s worth having on hand! This time I grabbed After Ease because I hear the contractions can get worse the second time around.
