When buying Catholic books. I’m a firm believe that you just cannot have enough. After all, according to St. Athanasius:
“You will not see anyone who is truly striving after his spiritual advancement who is not given to spiritual reading.”

First up, “grown up” books we love.
Cultivating Virtue: This gem separates each month into different virtues such as Humility, Mortification, Patience, Meekness etc, and each day into a manageable few paragraphs. This is my second year going through it…I figure if I do it enough years in a row I’ll get every day covered ;) Link here.
The St. Gallen Mafia: Ok. Hear me out. It’s not the “conspiracy” theory book you think it is. It’s actually a really enlightening look behind the scenes at the machinations that went into choosing our Pope. Very well cited, and reading more like a research paper, it helped me to understand the everlasting “how did we get here” question. Link here.
The Traditional Virtues According to St. Thomas Aquinas (A Study for Men): My husband is working his way through it, and said he is enjoying it and learning a lot! Link here.
Parenting favorites up next!
Parenting for Eternity: Not to be dramatic, but this changed my entire outlook on parenting. I think it’s the perfect gift for any baby shower, or young parents in your life! Link here.
Unbreakable: I flew through this one. It’s such a fun setup, where Kimberly tells the stories of saints influencing saints. My biggest takeaway is that small acts of courage build up to big ones, and what a concept to pass on to our children! Link here.
Defending Boyhood: Boy parents, this one is for you! In our modern world, it can be tough to find books that even acknowledge the difference between boys and girls. This is unapologetically NOT modern in that way. It helped me understand boys, and my own parenting tendencies. Link here.
My favorite category…kids books!
Cloud of Witnesses: You cannot go wrong with Katie Warner’s books! This is a sweet board book to introduce the saints that I often give as a gift, and it’ll be in my son’s Easter basket this year. Link here.
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: This sweet missal has incredible artwork, and truly captures the beauty of the Mass. It is geared towards the Latin Mass, but I think can be a great teaching tool even if you attend the Ordinary form Mass. Link here.
Jack Giorgio, Future Priest: Illustrated in a comic book style, this story introduces the priesthood in a fun and engaging way. A great addition to your shelves! Link here.
My Name is Philomena: This one truly blew me away. The illustrations, the story… this is more than a kid’s book. It’s a great one to sit down and read with the whole family. Link here.
And finally, Middle School Reads!
Father Finn’s Famous Three: Growing up in our house, these were a favorite! The stories are taken from Fr. Finn’s own experiences teaching in Jesuit boarding houses. Link here.
Outlaws of Ravenhurst: Another favorite in our house, here’s the description on this one from the website, “In seventeenth-century Scotland lies Ravenhurst, the stronghold of Clan Gordon, a family whose reputation for defending their people and their Catholic faith is legendary. But now the rights and lives of Scottish Catholics are in grave peril, and a traitorous usurper controls the clan. With the help of his mother, the “renegade priest,” and other heroic allies, young Charles Gordon must strive in the face of persecution and martyrdom to defend the true faith and restore to Ravenhurst a good, noble, loyal, and Catholic earl.” Link here.
Patron Saint of First Communicants: The story of Blessed Imelda Lambertini by Mary Fabyan Windeatt would make the perfect First Communion gift! Link here.
Stopping myself before I recommend every book in their library…
Are you a TAN Books fan? I’d love to hear your favorite in the comments, because I might need to add it to our poor bookshelves bowing under the weight of all of my planned reading. Don’t tell my husband ;)
